Improving a
site's security will, in general, impact ease of use, and vice versa. While users
want their data to be secure, they are not willing to navigate through a complex security
system every time they need to access that data. However, there are many ways to protect
your system without losing the advantages of connectivity. Here we discuss some of the
possible means by which you can prevent intruders from gaining access to your system,
while minimizing disruption to legitimate users.
Companies
implementing remote access solutions need to attach a "value" to different kinds
of information. One way to address this need during configuration is to have certain
remote access components -- for example, a specific remote access server -- configured for
a high security level, while other servers allow for unlimited access to
"insecure" data, such as customer support knowledgebases. Other steps that
organizations can take include requiring employees to change their passwords periodically,
or requiring complex passwords that mix both letters and numbers, which are more difficult
for an unauthorized user to guess. These internal procedures will have a definite impact
on security considerations, and can greatly diminish the threat of security breaches.
