A Lawyers View of Telecommuting?

Time is money; lawyers are not productive when we're schlepping up and down the freeway to work. Document drafting, editing and reviewing can be done as well, if not better, at home. Home is a place away from the interruptions guaranteed to happen in the office.
The disadvantages of working "from" home are low-speed dial-in and the usual need to "check-out" documents from the office network. If you started the process at 7:00 a.m. and logged 6 hours while at the office you would get home at 5:10 p.m. But, if you telecommuted and started at 7:00 a.m. you could log your 6 hours in by one o'clock p.m. and take the afternoon off. You would get the same amount of work done but without the driving, gossiping, wasting time and lunching at the office.
Working from home will make any lawyer’s professional life more flexible, less stressful, more fun, less tiring, more productive and less taxing on your financial resources (gas, oil, insurance, lunch, laundry fees, etc.) Working part time in the legal profession is nearly impossible. There is always some project or client that needs attention every single day. Telecommuting makes you available every day but not "at" the office every day. Telecommuting allows you to interact with partners and associates every day because both you and all of them have synchronized files that is exact duplicates of one another. Consequently, collaboration is easy and email can easily take the place of office conferences. When that won't do, there is always the telephone. Telecommuting allows for great flexibility. Some weeks you might be able to work at home two days, other weeks you might have to go to the office every day. Some work might be done at night that simply would not get done in the office. If things slow down at the office, you might be able to spend three days at home.
